Inmate escapes from Shakopee women's prison

A prisoner is back in custody after escaping from the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee Monday night.

SHAKOPEE, Minn. -A prisoner is back in custody after escaping from the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee Monday night.

Shakopee police were alerted of the escape at 7 p.m. and took the escaped inmateinto custody23 minutes later in a residential neighborhood near the prison.

A Code Red alert was being prepared when the criminal was recaptured. The investigation into how the prisoner got out of the facility isongoing.

Shakopee Mayor Brad Tabke calls the situation entirely preventable, and is calling for construction of a fence around thewomen's prison facility.

"This prison is regrettably located in a residential area and has no fence on it's perimeter," Tabke wrote in a post announcing the escape. "Today's escape dramatically underscores the need to build a fence around MCF-Shakopee. It was a completely unnecessary risk that must be corrected in the 2014 legislative session through the bonding bill or special legislation."

Mayor Tabke says Shakopee's City Council and local legislative representatives support building a fence around the prison.
