DULUTH, Minn. — Winters can be long and dark, but in Duluth, it’s pretty easy to brighten up your day during the holiday season.
Tourist destinations like the Glensheen Mansion rely on holiday tourism, and they’re expecting to finish strong this year.
According to the latest numbers on tourism tax revenue, collections for December 2022 hit record numbers with $1,040,468 collected.
“We have so many small businesses that really thrive in that November, December retail peak, and Glensheen is very much one of them,” said Joenah Sisson, Glensheen’s operations manager. “We definitely survive off of the holiday season.”
The mansion has over 25 Christmas trees throughout its 39-room, 12-acre estate. Sisson says there’s more magic at night.
“Our lights dim and you can tour Glensheen through the glow of the Christmas trees and candlelight,” said Sisson.
For the first time this year, Glensheen is opening up all five floors for the candlelight tours.
"It shines a light and I think we need that during the winter in Minnesota,” said visitor Sharon Landavazo.
Less than a 10-minute drive from Glensheen Mansion is Bentleyville “Tour of Lights.”
What started as a display on Nathan Bentley’s yard turned into a tradition for thousands, illuminated by five million lights.
“Most people tell me they’ve been coming to see the lights for the last 20 years and now they’re bringing their children,” said Bentley.
“Bentleyville coming to Bayfront Park in 2009 has been incredibly impactful, and it’s been great to see other businesses and organizations provide that Duluth holiday experience for visitors,” said Tricia Hobbs, the senior economic developer for the city.
Hobbs said the event calendar constantly has holiday occurrences.
“Whether that be Bentleyville, local markets, theater and live performances, and other festive events, there really is something for everyone,” said Hobbs.
