U of M professor discusses 14th Amendment's role in ballot rulings

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to determine whether former President Donald Trump can keep running for the White House.

MINNEAPOLIS — It's only the first week of an election year, but so much is happening it's hard to keep up.  Much of the news is centered on whether or not states will allow Donald Trump to appear on their ballots.

Colorado and Maine are the states where Trump has been disqualified.

Here in Minnesota and four other states, the courts have decided to keep him on the ballot.

A decision is still pending in Oregon.

The decisions to take Trump off the ballot are based on the 14th Amendment, which says officials who have "engaged in insurrection" are disqualified from holding office.

The U.S. Supreme Court will likely take up the case in the coming weeks.

Professor of political science and law at the University of Minnesota, Timothy Johnson, joined KARE Saturday to discuss the topic.
