MINNEAPOLIS — Crew members of the USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul, the first Navy warship commissioned in Minnesota, are visiting the Twin Cities.
The ship was commissioned in Duluth last year and is homeported in Mayport, Florida.
The Minnesota Navy League Council, a nonprofit civilian organization that supports the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard, organized the visit.
The USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul can travel fast – more than 40 knots, the equivalent of 46 miles per hour – and it's renowned for its ability to fit through tight spaces and move nimbly from side to side.
The Freedom-class warship specializes in shallow-water missions near shores.
The 387-foot surface vessel, built by Lockheed Martin, has a flight deck and hangar for two helicopters.
