Redefining beauty in a world that demands being flawless

Therapist, author and "Impossible Beauty" podcast host Melissa Johnson visited KARE 11 Saturday to discuss how we are being sold a broken form of beauty.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — America is obsessed with beauty.

While some say it's just part of our social media world where thin bodies and good looks are celebrated and shared, Melissa Johnson is not among them. The licensed therapist, author and host of the "Impossible Beauty" podcast says we need to redefine what beauty is, and points to these stats as evidence.

  • Nearly 2/3 of American adults edit their photos before posting them
  • A full 80% of girls have used an app to change their appearance before the age of 13
  • 85-95% of women are dissatisfied with their bodies to the point of hating them
  • 91% of college-aged women have tried to control their weight through dieting,
  • Girls develop a desire to be thinner starting at age 6.

Johnson says real beauty reinforces wholeness and thriving, not shame and and a poor relationship with our bodies. She visited KARE 11 Saturday to talk about her new book, "Soul-Deep Beauty: Fighting For Our True Worth In A World Demanding Flawless," inviting readers and viewers to heal their relationship with food and their bodies.
