Minnetonka food drive aims to fill cupboards of those in need over the holidays

The ICA Food Shelf, Excelsior Rotary and students from Minnetonka H.S. are teaming up to assist families experiencing food insecurity.

MINNETONKA, Minn. — Food is a big part of the holidays, and most take it for granted that tables will be full for families who are celebrating.

The folks at ICA Food Shelf know that is not always the case. Visits are up at the Minnetonka-based social service agency, as they are at most food shelves across Minnesota.

This Holiday season, ICA is partnering with students from Minnetonka High School to lift up families and individuals experiencing food insecurity. The student-run Interact Club operates a food shelf inside the high school, supplying food and household goods to students in need. ICA, in turn, provides the items needed to stock the school operation.

On Saturday, Nov. 23, the Interact Club, Excelsior Rotary and the ICA Food Shelf are conducting a food drive at Minnetonka High School as demand is even greater during the holidays. Drop donations from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Minnetonka High School, located at 18301 Hwy 7 in Minnetonka. Drive up to the main entrance (by door N1 and the Arts Center entrance) and someone will be there to lend a hand.

ICA Executive Director Dan Narr, Excelsior Rotary Club member and Interact Club advisor Cari Gerlicher and a number of students joined KARE 11's Samie Solina to talk about the food drive, increasing needs and how people can help.
