Raising awareness about the plight of puppies in shelters

People need to remember that puppies require constant attention so another option is to adopt an adult dog.

MINNEAPOLIS — National Puppy Day is Saturday, March 23. It was created in 2006 to raise awareness about the plight of puppies in shelters and encourage people to adopt rather than buy from pet stores or breeders.

Volunteers at Ruff Start Rescue -- an animal shelter in Princeton -- would like to use National Puppy Day as a reminder to Minnesotans of the state of puppies right now.

Many shelters are facing an increasing demand for care with litters of puppies without a home.

That's why rescues and shelters in Minnesota are encouraging people to consider adoption.

People need to remember that puppies require constant attention, so another option is to adopt an adult dog.

Think about the cost, too. When you adopt, initial vetting (full exam, spay/neuter, preventatives, dental exam/cleaning) for each animal is handled before the adoption.

This saves adopters between $500 to $1,000 per animal versus going to a veterinarian after purchasing from a breeder.
