Omnifest at Science Museum of Minnesota to show 5 films

The museum's William L. McKnight-3M Omnitheater, which is 70 feet wide and 90 feet tall, provides an immersive experience for moviegoers.

ST PAUL, Minn. — The celebration of science on the biggest screens in the Twin Cities metro returns on Feb. 24 during Omnifest at the Science Museum of Minnesota.

The museum's William L. McKnight-3M Omnitheater, which is 70 feet wide and 90 feet tall, provides an immersive experience for moviegoers.

During KARE 11 Saturday, Allison Leveritt from the Science Museum discussed the event and what people can expect from the week-long celebration of science in film.

Here are the 5 films in this year's Omnifest:

Deep Sky

This brand-new movie takes audiences on a journey to never-before-seen cosmic landscapes and recently discovered exoplanets, thanks to awe-inspiring images captured by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope. Viewers will follow the high-stakes global mission to build JWST and launch it into orbit 1 million miles from Earth in an attempt to answer questions that have haunted us since the beginning of time: Where did we come from? How did the universe begin? And are we alone? Narrated by Michelle Williams.

Pandas

At Chengdu Panda Base in China, scientists are taking the captive breeding program to the next level and preparing captive-born cubs for the wild. In Pandas, Omnitheater visitors will follow one such researcher, whose passion leads her to initiate a new technique inspired by a black bear rehabilitator in rural New Hampshire. What starts as a cross-cultural collaboration becomes a life-changing journey for one special panda named Qian Qian. Narrated by Kristen Bell.

Asteroid Hunters

Asteroid Hunters introduces viewers to asteroid scientists — the best line of defense between Earth and an asteroid's destructive path — and reveals the cutting-edge tools and techniques they use to detect and track asteroids, as well as the technology that may one day protect our planet. Omnitheater visitors will witness the latest in planetary defense and see how science, ingenuity, and determination combine to explore the world's most preventable natural disaster. Narrated by Daisy Ridley.

Back from the Brink

The Omnitheater's giant screen is the perfect place to watch the remarkable true story of three animal species — the Channel Island Fox, the Golden Monkey, and the migrating crabs of Christmas Island — that have been rescued from the brink of extinction. They'll meet the scientists, park rangers, and students working to save endangered animals around the world. Narrated by Claire Danes.

Stellar Tours: A Star is Born

They say everyone gets fifteen minutes of fame, but a STAR gets hundreds of thousands of years! During this interactive life story of a real star, Omnitheater visitors will witness its shimmering birth and follow along to its dark, implosive death, all while choosing which juicy details to uncover along the way. They'll explore a star's life to the very farthest limits in the Science Museum's newest live digital telescope show.
