Rare taste test of Minnesota's new apple

The Kudos apple, developed by researchers at the University of Minnesota, is a combination of the Honeycrisp and Zestar.

MINNEAPOLIS — It's apple season in Minnesota and, seemingly right on cue, the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum has introduced a new apple named Kudos.

It is the 29th apple the U of M has introduced, but it won't be available to the public for two to three years.

One of the most famous apple inventions was the Honeycrisp, which was developed in the 1970s and released in 1991.

Kudos is being called the apple child of the Honeycrisp and Zestar. Apple lovers should notice the crisp, juicy texture of Honeycrisp and the rich flavor of Zestar. When perfectly ripe, Kudos has an almost-tropical, passion-fruit-like flavor.

One of Minnesota's longtime breeders, David Bedford, joined KARE 11 Saturday for a rare taste test of some Kudos plucked from the Arboretum's research orchards.

Bedford is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and in the Department of Horticultural Science at the University of Minnesota. He and Professor Jim Luby were instrumental in discovering the Honeycrisp.
