Tips for responsible dog ownership in public

Kathryn Newman from Augusta Dog Training and Ozzie the Pitbull joined KARE 11 Saturday for a "petiquette" lesson.

EDINA, Minn. — We often talk about training dogs to be well-behaved, but how about we as humans be better pet owners, especially in public?

Kathryn Newman from Augusta Dog Training and Ozzie the Pitbull joined KARE 11 Saturday for a "Petiquette" lesson.

Tips for dog owners on a walk or trail:

  • Be in the moment. In situations of high activity, get off your phone and pay attention to your dog and your surroundings.
  • Keep your dog under control. The heel position is your left side, even with your body.
  • Don't let your dog rush up to greet other dogs. Not all dogs are friendly, and it could lead to a confrontation or bite.
  • If your dog is proficient at loose leash walking, STILL be considerate and bring your dog to heel when passing other dogs.

Tips for dog owners at businesses that allow dogs:

  • Ensure your dog goes to the bathroom outside before entering the store.
  • Be mannerly. Visiting these merchants with your dog is a privilege, not an entitlement.
  • Don't get in the way. Be mindful of other customers and store employees trying to do their job.
  • Buy something even if it is paper towels and lightbulbs. It demonstrates our appreciation that our dogs are welcome.
