World Cup cross-country skiers gliding across Minneapolis

Thirty-thousand people are expected to attend the races at Theodore Wirth Regional Park on Saturday and Sunday.

MINNEAPOLIS — The world's best cross-country skiers -- including Minnesota's Jessie Diggins -- are racing through Minneapolis this weekend.

The Stifel Loppet Cup is the first World Cup cross-country race to be held on U.S. soil in more than 20 years.

Thirty-thousand people are expected to attend the races at Theodore Wirth Regional Park on Saturday and Sunday.

Originally, the global competition was scheduled for a Minneapolis visit in 2020 but was canceled because of the pandemic.

Last February, officials rescheduled the event for President's Day weekend (Feb. 17-19, 2024).

"This will be the first time we're able to show all the people who believe in us, who are passionate about cross-country skiing, who are getting involved in the sport — this is our chance to show them what it looks like and to share that energy with them," Diggins said at the February 2023 news conference. "It's really going to inspire a lot of people."

According to loppetcup.com, general admission and grandstand tickets to the Stifel Loppet Cup are sold out but VIP tickets are still available.
