5 safety tips for Airbnb hosts

If you're someone playing host through Airbnb, check out these safety reminders before handing over the keys.

MINNEAPOLIS — Thousands of basketball fans are headed to the Twin Cities for Final Four weekend.

With hotels booking up fast, homeowners are looking to open their doors to make a little extra change.

If you're someone playing host through Airbnb, check out these safety reminders from the company before handing over the keys.

1. Always talk to guests through the Airbnb site

This way you are protected through Airbnb. There are bad people out there that will try to scam you. This goes for booking, payments and any communication you may have with your guest.

2. Equip your homes and guests with  safety essentials

Guests might need certain supplies in case there is an emergency. You probably already have these items. This includes things like a working smoke and carbon monoxide detector, a fire extinguisher, and a first aid kit.

3. Set clear expectations for your guests

Some Airbnbs are just a room rental, while others are an entire home. Be sure to let them know any house rules, from no jumping on the bed to taking your shoes off at the door. Let guests know if you have quiet hours you want them to abide by.

4. Get to know your guests in advance

Answer any questions they may have so you both feel at ease and comfortable.

5. If something doesn't seem right, call Airbnb

Airbnb is aware that we have a big event happening and will have a team here to offer support to hosts 24/7.

Last but not least, be an ambassador to the Twin Cities by being a good host.

Help  your guests navigate the area by offering recommendations places to eat and sites to see.
