Abbott Northwestern Hospital upgrades emergency department

The renovations cost $25 million and includes more patient rooms and mental health beds.

Abbott Northwestern Hospital is unveiling its renovated emergency department today.

The hospital is a teaching and specialty hospital and the largest not-for-profit hospital in the Twin Cities. 

The $25 million renovation includes three more patient rooms, now 38, with larger rooms to accommodate staff and more equipment.

There are also new family spaces, including a grieving space for families to spend time with a deceased loved one.

Abbott Northwestern also added five mental health beds in a locked suite. Allina Health said that approximately 10 percent of all emergency room patients are mental health related cases.

Square footage was also expanded from 26,600 to 32,000 square feet.
