A lot of us take our holiday photos on phones rather than using a traditional camera or paying a professional photographer. While you're getting together with family this weekend, we want your shots to turn out great.
Here are three simple things to keep in mind before you snap a pic:
1. Find the light!
Before you take a photo of your adorable nephew in his adorable holiday sweater, look around the room for an area with the most light. Think of the light as a spotlight shining toward your nephew's face. If the light were behind him, it would cause the background to be the brightest thing in the photo, not his face.
2. Leave the antlers on the reindeer!
Whether you're moving on to capture the moment your aunt decides to make a speech, or you're in charge of taking the group family photo, make sure nothing in the background is poking out of anyone's head. Take a few extra seconds to either move to the right or left or have the person you're shooting take a step to the right or left. Your aunt will thank you.
3. Burst mode!
Okay, you're ready, but someone's squirming around. Two words. Burst mode. On iPhone, hold down the shutter button for photos to be taken in rapid succession. Odds are, one of them has got to be good.
But if you want "great," consider upgrading your tech. Ravi from Apple says the camera on the iPhone XR, released in 2018, is the best yet. It features a camera system with Portrait mode in a single, wide-angle lens.
"What you can do is actually go and change the bokeh," Ravi said. "Bokeh is what is referred to as this out-of-focus region in the back."
According to Apple, the auto focus on the iPhone XR is faster than previous versions and the quality of images taken in low light has improved. The iPhone XR also features an all-screen Liquid Retina display. Ravi says that's especially helpful when viewing photos on your phone.
Right now, you can save money on the iPhone XR by trading in your current iPhone as long as it's an iPhone 5 or newer. The newer your phone, the more you'll save.
