Minnesota social studies curriculum up for debate

One of the biggest points of contention is whether to require ethnic studies and, if so, what grade level should that begin.

MINNESOTA, USA — Social studies classes have raised a bevy of questions from residents, from what topics are covered to what grade level the subject should be taught.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Minnesota residents have a chance to chime in and change the way it is taught in school classrooms. One of the biggest points of contention is whether to require ethnic studies and, if so, what grade level should that begin.

Per state statute, these academic standards must be evaluated every ten years. An administrative judge is holding virtual hearings and Minnesotans can comment or listen in.

Democrats at the State Capitol have embraced the idea, as something that will help students see themselves and their families reflected in what's being taught.

Republicans wrote to the judge saying that only history, economics, geography, government and citizenship should be included in social studies curriculum because those are spelled out in state law. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz chimed in, as a former teacher.

“As an ethnic studies teacher, I'm pretty glad it's in there. I think it's important we tell Minnesota's entire story," Walz said. "I think until recently this was not debatable. The best research and best practices are put inside this. The administrative judge will hear that. People will give their input. We're gonna tell everybody's story here.”

There are two hearings for Minnesotans to voice their opinions: Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday from 1-4:15 p.m. For more information on taking part in the hearings, go to the Minnesota Department of Education site at this link

The judge is expected to make a ruling in January, and the new standards will go into place in fall 2026.
