Roads clogged as holidays approach

What you should know before heading out of town.

MINNEAPOLIS — Before you head out for the holidays, there are a few things you should know before you go -- and we're not just talking about remembering to bring Kevin.

Home Alone? Anyone?

No, the message to remember is this: don't leave during the rush hours. MNDOT urges drivers to avoid getting on the road between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. as well as 3:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m.

As for your route, there are a couple of spots you can expect to see backed up such as areas where there are ramp closures. The ramp from I-35W North to I-94 West is closed. The detour is WB I-694, WB Hwy 62, NB Hwy 100, EB I-394.

The same thing goes for the ramp from I-94 East to I-35W South. The detour is WB I-394 to SB Hwy 100 to EB Hwy 62.

Outside of the Twin Cities, expect to see a detour where HWY 14 meets HWY 15 in New Ulm. That's happening all winter.

Good luck, and stay safe!
