GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — We have had some nasty storms as of late, including a busy day of tornadoes and as recently as Sunday.
Question is, how do we stack up in 2019 as scompared to other years?
You might be surprised to learn we're pretty far behind normal for tornadoes in Minnesota this summer. Before Sunday's storms we had just 16 tornadoes and after Sunday's storms the number will come in above 20, well behind the 36 in a normal season.
Of course the severe weather season isn't done yet. We normally see the bulk of our tornadoes in May, June (the most) and July but it CAN happen as late as fall. Last year, for example, we had only 13 tornadoes through late July but in August and September we had an additional 31, pushing us up to 44... which is actually above normal!
The most tornadoes we've had in a season was 113 in 2010. Nationally, however, we are above normal after an active spring season in the south.
