Sven Sundgaard goes snowshoeing at the National Wildlife Refuge

What could be better than a free activity while getting to know one of our state gems?

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Winter doesn't appear to be going anywhere soon.

With a fresh round of heavy snow this weekend, you might as well just embrace it while you can.

After all, the first two thirds of the winter was pretty lack-luster for snow and winter activity.

What could be better than a free activity while getting to know one of our state gems?

At the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington, you can rent snow shoes for FREE and explore numerous trails (7 miles worth for snow shoe) in the woods around the Minnesota River, all while airplanes buzz overhead from MSP airport.

The snow shoes are available while the snow sticks around. They even have guided hikes for families on Sundays.
