Brooklyn Park PD investigating deadly shooting inside apartment complex

Police found a deceased woman with multiple gunshot wounds inside an apartment complex.

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn — A suspect is in custody after a woman was shot and killed Monday afternoon inside an apartment complex in Brooklyn Park.

According to the Brooklyn Park Police Department, officers were called to the Brooks Landing Apartments on 74th Avenue North on a report of an active shooter. Police say when they arrived, they found a deceased woman inside the building with multiple gunshot wounds. Officials identified the woman as 29-year-old Deana Cathlene Doely.

"Obviously, that's one of the worst types of calls an officer can try to mentally prepare for as they're driving 100 miles per hour," said Brooklyn Park Inspector Elliot Faust. "You have no idea what you're about to walk into."

Residents were all evacuated and couldn't return without a police escort until hours later, including Ashely Munn.

"I've never seen anything like this," said Munn, who lives on the third floor. "The officer, he's like that's blocked off, you can't go in."

Several law enforcement agencies, including Brooklyn Park SWAT, responded to help search for the suspect after a second crime scene was discovered on a different floor inside the apartment building.

Officers eventually located the suspect a few miles northwest of the crime scene. Police say a gun was recovered when the suspect was taken into custody.

"We have to maintain our composure and continue to accomplish the mission," said Faust. "But you can bet that every one of them had what happened in Burnsville on their mind. We're all human beings; we have families, we have lives outside this job and it's a lot to manage."

Officers say the suspect was staying at that complex and that this wasn't a random shooting. They eventually escorted all the other residents back to their apartments, but it will take hours to process the scene.

"There's going to be a lot more work to be done," said Faust. "We're doing our best to triage the situation as best as we can and let people find some normalcy."
