MINNEAPOLIS — A man is seeking more than $1.5 million in damages after claiming he was hit by a projectile fired at him by the Minneapolis Police while he was waiting for a bus during the unrest following George Floyd's murder.
According to the lawsuit, Abdi Edan Adam was outside the Third Precinct on Lake Street waiting for a bus when an MPD officer allegedly fired a rubber bullet — or 40mm impact projectile — from the roof of the precinct. Adam, who said he was not participating in any protests, was hit in the forehead by the projectile and was then escorted to safety by bystanders before being taken to Allina Hospital. The lawsuit also claims that no dispersal orders were given.
"As a result of the acts and omissions of Defendants, Mr. Adam has sustained numerous neurological injuries, a concussion, pain and suffering, medical bills, other injuries both permanent and temporary, as well as lasting emotional trauma," the lawsuit reads. "He has a very conspicuous permanent scar and dent on his forehead, and has struggled with vision problems in his right eye since the attack."
The lawsuit is filed against eight officers, the police department and the city for "violation of Adam's constitutional rights," according to court documents.
Adam's attorney, Paul Applebaum, cited a handful of other related cases, including Jaleel Stallings who received $1.5 million last year to settle a lawsuit alleging he was beaten by Minneapolis officers during a night of unrest following the murder of George Floyd.
