MINNEAPOLIS — A major reconstruction project to make Lowry Avenue more pedestrian-friendly in northeast Minneapolis will begin next month, and officials are warning drivers of the potential impact it will have on traffic.

Hennepin County, in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board, Metro Transit and the six Lowry Avenue Northeast corridor neighborhoods, will begin reconstruction in mid-April between Washington Street and Central Avenue. It's the first phase of a project county officials say is to make the road "a safer, more comfortable street for people walking, rolling, biking, taking transit and driving to the many communities and businesses along the corridor."

The first phase is expected to last until mid-October, and will require traffic be closed in both directions between that stretch. Reconstruction will continue in 2025 between Central Avenue and Johnson Streets, according to county officials.

In a press release, officials said the project will feature a shared-use path along the north side for walkers, bikers and rollers, a repaved road with a three-lane design, wider boulevards, center medians at Madison, Quincy and Fillmore Streets, and improved crossings at multiple intersections.

A second phase is being discussed between Marshall and Washington Streets, however, specific designs have not yet been approved. County officials say they hope to have the green light for the second phase by the end of 2024.
