Mall of America to get gunshot detection technology

The city of Bloomington agreed to share in the expenses of the technology last January.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — The biggest mall in America will be getting a gunshot detection security system, according to documents from the city of Bloomington.

The Mall of America and the city of Bloomington agreed to share in the expenses of the technology last January.

The MOA "intends to implement a system to immediately detect and geolocate a critical incident involving a gunshot," according to the Bloomington City Council agenda on Jan. 29.

The "ten-year cost of the Detection System is estimated to be at least $2,080,000.00," according to the documents.

The city of Bloomington agreed to "pay up to $1,403,125.00 towards the initial assessment."

The gunshot detection provider stated that it will provide the mall with "detection hardware that monitors for an active shooter event at the site, alerting law enforcement and supporting the building lockdown procedures" according to a master services agreement between MOA and the company.

Bloomington officials said the name of the gunshot detection company was redacted from the agreement due to trade secret data and security reasons.

Security concerns have been raised in the past at the mall following shootings in 2022 and 2023.

Some of the mall's security enhancements include installing facial recognition technology, metal detectors and more security officers.
