EDINA, Minn. — A 21-year-old Minneapolis man is now charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting that happened Saturday night outside an Edina strip mall.
Hennepin County prosecutors charged Kayvon Madison with one count of second-degree murder Wednesday, claiming he shot and killed 23-year-old Darien Roberson of St. Paul in the strip mall parking lot on Dec. 2. If convicted, the sentence carries a maximum of 40 years in prison.
A criminal complaint alleges Madison was one of multiple people who called authorities following the shooting, reporting he had "just shot someone" and claiming Roberson "came at me." When police arrived, court documents say they found Madison at the scene standing in the parking lot next to a holstered handgun and a shooting victim, both of which were on the ground.
Prosecutors said Madison was subsequently arrested and taken into custody while police interviewed witnesses in the area. According to the complaint more than a dozen people, including Roberson and Madison, gathered at a restaurant in the strip mall for a mutual friend's birthday celebration. The complaint goes on to say the two men were familiar with each other but had not been in contact since having a disagreement in 2021.
Later in the evening, authorities said both men joined other members of the group in the parking lot to take photos before Roberson is seen on surveillance video turning to leave. Prosecutors said the video then showed Madison saying something to Roberson as he moved toward him. Authorities said the interaction led to a verbal altercation before it escalated into physical violence.
According to one witness interviewed by police, Roberson told Madison he "didn't want to talk about it" but Madison "kept pushing the issue."
The complaint said surveillance video showed Madison pulling out a gun and shooting Roberson five times. Madison was then restrained until police arrived.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner determined Roberson died as the result of multiple gunshot wounds to his cheek, neck, shoulder and chest.
