MINNEAPOLIS — Months after officers found a mother and toddler with gunshot injuries in Minneapolis, a man has been charged for the mother's murder and injuring the 2-year-old.
MPD officers initially responded to a shooting call on the 2900 block alley of 18th Avenue South after 9 p.m. on May 19.
Upon arrival, the officers found 35-year-old Lilian Magali Poalacin Perez who had been shot in the backseat of the vehicle while holding her 2-year-old son, according to the MPD. According to the charging document, there were two other children in the vehicle as well.
Perez would ultimately succumb to her wounds at the hospital.
The MPD obtained surveillance video which allegedly showed the vehicle Perez was in arriving behind a home in the alley.
A man, who was the father of the three children in the car, exits the vehicle. He had gone to the home to borrow tools from his brother, according to the charging documents.
After that man exits the vehicle, another car pulls up behind his car.
According to charging documents, that's when 20-year-old Ayale Abdullahi Ali exited the passenger seat of the second car and fired multiple shots into the other car.
Seconds later, the first man returns to his car and starts screaming after seeing his wife and child had been shot, according to the document.
Ali allegedly shot at the man multiple times but did not hit him.
Investigators tracked Ali's phone, which showed he was at the scene of the murder when it occurred, according to the charging documents.
Investigators also found messages on Ali's phone which showed he was trying to trade guns less than 24 hours after the fatal shooting.
According to the charging document, Ali was seen wearing the same shoes he allegedly wore to the shooting at a gas station a few hours earlier.
