Man dies one day after gunfire exchange with St. Paul PD that injured officer

The man who died has been identified by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension as 24-year-old Brandon Keys.

ST PAUL, Minn — The man who shot a St. Paul police officer on Thursday has died from his injuries after the officer allegedly returned fire. 

The man who died has been identified by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension as 24-year-old Brandon Keys. 

According to the agency, Keys died of his injuries early Friday morning. The BCA also identified the officer involved in the shooting as Michael Tschida, who is recovering after being shot in the leg. 

Tschida was responding to a report of an order of protection violation, according to the BCA. 

A woman had contacted the police reporting that she was driving in her car with another man when Keys began following her and intentionally hitting her car with his, said the BCA. 

When the woman stopped at a red light, Keys allegedly approached her vehicle and she told the police that he had a gun. 

According to the BCA, when Tschida arrived on the scene, he ordered Keys to the ground and the two exchanged gunfire. 

The SPPD said Keys shot first in Thursday night's press conference. 

Tschida shot Keys in the head, while Tschida was shot in the leg by Keys, according to the BCA.
