MILLE LACS, Minn — A man died after officials say his truck went through the ice Friday morning on Mille Lacs Lake.

According to the Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office, the man and his truck broke through the ice near the MSA Flagship Inn in Isle, Minnesota. Emergency responders found the man in the water wearing a flotation device. Officials pulled him to shore and then transported him to Mille Lacs Health System Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He's been identified as 80-year-old Richard Gadbois of Isle.

In a press release, Mille Lacs County Sheriff Kyle Burton said the ice was about 6 inches thick where the truck went through. The recommended thickness for clear ice is between 13 and 17 inches for a truck.

"This is another reminder to the public that ice conditions are not sage for driving cars and trucks on right now," Burton said in the release.

In the days following Gadbois' death, a GoFundMe was created to support his family financially through funeral services and other lingering medical costs. As of Tuesday evening, the fundraiser had collected almost $8,000 toward its $20,000 goal.
