BECKER COUNTY, Minn. — Officials said a man was found dead early on Saturday morning after he didn't return home from fishing near his home.

The Becker County Sheriff's Department said in a news release that just after 2 a.m. on Dec. 23, crews received a report of a man who hadn't returned home after going fishing near his home on Big Toad Lake. The man left his home on the afternoon of the 22nd, driving an ATV to his fish house.

After his wife was not able to reach him for several hours, she called the man's brother. When the brother found a crack in the ice with open water, the missing man's wife reached out to the sheriff's office.

Crews from the Wolf Lake Fire Department and the Detroit Lakes Fire Department suited up, and just before 3:30 a.m. located the victim and his upside-down ATV in four to five feet of water.

The victim was taken to an ambulance where he was later pronounced dead.

Officials have not released the man's name as of Saturday.

The incident remains under investigation.
