ST. PAUL, Minn. - Police say they have fatally shot an armed man in St. Paul while responding to an early-morning 911 call about shots fired at a home.
St. Paul police released a statement Sunday saying officers were dispatched to a multi-unit dwelling around 2:30 a.m. after a male 911 caller reported that someone had fired multiple shots inside a residence.
Police say responding officers encountered a man with a handgun, and two officers eventually discharged their weapons.
A downstairs neighbor, who did not feel comfortable revealing her identity, said she heard many gunshots after police entered the property through the front porch.
No details about the man or the officers were immediately released.
Both officers were wearing activated body cameras. The footage is being turned over to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
"There are no winners in this situation," St. Paul police spokesperson Sgt. Mike Ernster said. "No officer ever wants to be involved in a situation like this. These officers don't choose their calls."
John Thompson, who has been speaking out on police conduct since the death of Philando Castile, said he cannot trust the work of the BCA.
"The community has zero faith in this agency," he said. "It's kind of like the police policing the police."
Thompson said he'd like an external entity not connected to local government to investigate the police-involved shootings.
St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter issued the following statement:
"Last night's officer-involved shooting was a tragedy for our entire city," said Mayor Carter. "As we await further details, my heart goes out to the family of the deceased, to our Saint Paul officers, and to every member of our community as we all grieve and process this loss. I am working closely with Chief Axtell and the BCA to ensure a thorough, transparent and timely investigation, including the release of the body cam footage as soon as possible."
KARE 11 has reached out to the BCA for a statement. A BCA spokesperson said they will release the identity of the two officers involved and the victim as soon as they are through their initial round of interviews with the involved parties and witnesses.
