MONTROSE, Minn — The Montrose man shot by deputies outside a Dollar General Store along Highway 12 earlier this month "remains hospitalized in stable condition," according to a Thursday news release from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).
On April 15, Matthew Lyrek, 38, was shot "multiple times" by deputies who were attempting to arrest him on "multiple felony warrants."
The deputies made contact with him just before 1 p.m. on that day at the Montrose Dollar General store. According to the BCA, Lyrek pulled out a handgun when the deputies tried to arrest him. Seven Wright County sheriff's deputies "used force" in the incident, according to the BCA news release.
One of the deputies works undercover and by law cannot be identified.
The BCA listed the other six deputies involved:
- Deputy Andrew Lundeen fired his department rifle. Lundeen has eight years of law enforcement experience.
- Deputy Heath Gilliham deployed his Taser. Gilliham has 32 years of law enforcement experience.
- Deputy William Kenyon deployed his Taser. Kenyon has 10 years of law enforcement experience.
- Deputy Jeff McMackins used less-than-lethal force. McMackins has 15 years of law enforcement experience.
- Deputy Jason Oltmanns used less-than-lethal force. Oltmanns has 16 years of law enforcement experience.
- Deputy Matthew Bilitz used less-than-lethal force. Bilitz has six years of law enforcement experience.
The BCA did not specify the definition of "less-than-lethal force."
Authorities said two handguns and other firearms were found inside Lyrek's vehicle.
BCA crime scene agents also found cartridge casings, "and evidence of less-lethal munition and Taser deployments."
The BCA said Wright County deputies do not wear body cameras but cameras on their squad cars captured part of the scene.
When the investigation is complete, the BCA is expected to take its findings to the Wright County Attorney's Office.
