ST PAUL, Minn. — St. Paul police and the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPS) are investigating after a man was shot at a post office branch in the city Sunday afternoon.
Squads were initially dispatched to the 1700 block of W. 7th Street on reports of a shooting just before 3:30 p.m., according to a statement from St. Paul police. Responding officers found a man who was suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. That man was transported to Regions Hospital by paramedics.
Investigators say preliminary information suggests the victim was shot by one of his coworkers at the post office, where both work.
Officers located the person believed to be the shooter shortly before 5 p.m. in the area of W. 7th St. and Madison Street and arrested them during a traffic stop.
This comes as mail carriers held a rally outside a downtown Minneapolis location Monday demanding a new contract and better working conditions.
"The morale at the station is already low because the pay is too low," said USPS Mail Carrier Jorge Quintero. "But to have an event like this, you know, impact our everyday job… to feel unsafe at work makes that job all the more difficult."
"Everyone knows the terms going postal, and unfortunately this is likely another situation where that's happened," said USPS mail carrier Tim Bash at the rally.
The USPS released a statement on the incident later Sunday night. “The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is investigating a shooting incident, which occurred on Sunday, October 13, 2024, in St. Paul, Minnesota. We are working jointly with local law enforcement. There is no ongoing threat to the public. At this time, there is no additional information the Postal Inspection Service can release.”
