ST. PAUL, Minn. - A man is recovering after becoming trapped in a trench cave in while digging on the Central Corridor light rail project in St. Paul Monday morning.
St. Paul Fire Marshall Steve Zaccard says rescuers were summoned to Park Street West and University Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. There, they founda man in his 20s stuck in a trench three feet wide and 12 foot deep.
Zaccard says the victim was digging holes for poles that carry the overhead wires for the light rail trains when soft dirt caved in around him. A member of the fire department's technical rescue team was lowered down into the trench, placed belt around the victim and both were pulled out by a bucket truck.
The worker was transported to Regions Hospital with minor injuries and was described as conscious and alert.
The man is employed by The Walsh Construction Company.
