MARENGO, Wisconsin — Authorities say two people died when a single-engine plane crashed into a home in northeastern Wisconsin.
The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office received numerous 911 calls about 2:40 p.m. Saturday with reports of the crash in the town of Marengo. No one on the ground was hurt.
On Monday the sheriff's office identified the victims as 29-year-old Aaron Mika and his sister Aleah Mika, 21. Both are from Marengo, a small town about 80 miles from Duluth.
Investigators do not believe there was anyone else in the plane. The aircraft struck a home on a farmstead when it crashed, but no one inside the structure was harmed.
Homeowner Martin Ollanketo says he and his wife were watching TV when they heard what sounded like a bomb. The plane crash destroyed their front porch. Ollanketo said he tried to help the victims, but to no avail. Ollanketo told reporters he knew those who died, remembering attending their graduation parties.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
