Mayor Frey proposes new site option for Third Precinct

The Committee of the Whole is set to meet on Oct. 31.

MINNEAPOLIS — *Editor's Note: The above video first aired Oct. 17, 2023 following the Committee of the Whole's vote to gather more information about potential locations.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey proposed an additional site for the Third Precinct, just days before the Committee of the Whole is scheduled to meet.

The new location would be at 2633 Minnehaha Ave. and would take about nine months to build out, according to a release from the city. It would also be the site of a community safety center and would cost an estimated $14 million to purchase and develop.

The Committee of the Whole is set to meet on Oct. 31 after voting to gather more information on potential locations back on Oct. 17. During that meeting, three other locations were being discussed — 2600 Minnehaha Ave. S.; 2520 26th Ave. S.; and 3716 Cheatham Ave.

The Third Precinct burned down during the riots after George Floyd's murder more than three years ago. Since then, there has been disagreement over how to proceed.

In September, just days after the council voted to approve plans to move the police department's First and Third Precincts into a vacant plaza downtown, the body then walked back those plans and instead, voted to move the issue back to committee for further review.
