Makeshift memorial for Officer Jamal Mitchell begins at MPD 5th Precinct

Community members have begun placing flowers on a squad car outside the precinct building.

MINNEAPOLIS — Less than 24 hours after Officer Jamal Mitchell was among those shot and killed in south Minneapolis, a makeshift memorial has started to honor him.

Community members have begun leaving flowers and notes on a Minneapolis squad car parked in front of the Minneapolis Police Department 5th precinct building at Nicollet Ave and W 31st Street. Mayor Jacob Frey and other community members were seen there on Friday morning.

Investigators said Mitchell, 36, was "ambushed" while responding to a deadly shooting at an apartment at 22nd and Blaisdell in the Whittier neighborhood in south Minneapolis on Thursday night.

Formal memorial service plans are in the works.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is handling the investigation.
