Minneapolis Fire Chief speaks after 2 bodies recovered day after apartment fire was put out

"As a firefighter, one of the toughest things to live with is the knowledge that we are not able to save every life," said Chief Tyner.

MINNEAPOLIS — Days after a devastating fire in Minneapolis left two people dead and dozens displaced, the chief of the Minneapolis Fire Department is speaking out.

"Yesterday, upon being notified that a resident was unaccounted for, fire crews reentered the building to search the collapsed portion, where we recovered 2 victims," said Chief Bryan Tyner.

Both victims were found underneath the collapsed roof in the same unit, according to a release from the MFD. So far, the victims have only been identified as an elderly man and a woman.

"As a firefighter, one of the toughest things to live with is the knowledge that we are not able to save every life," added Chief Tyner.

A search of the remainder of the building using a cadaver dog confirmed there were no additional fire victims in the building, said the MFD.

According to the MFD, the fire began around 9:45 p.m. at 1501 11th Ave. S. on Tuesday.

The fire quickly escalated to three alarms due to the rapid escalation of conditions, and crews had to exit the building and switch to an exterior attack to ensure their safety. Both gas and electricity to the building were shut off as a precaution.
