MINNEAPOLIS — A Minneapolis firefighter was taken to the hospital and one person died Saturday morning after a large fire broke out in a boarded-up residence on the 2100 block of Fremont Ave. North.
In a series of tweets, the Minneapolis Fire Department said crews responded to a fire at a 2 1/2 story vacant and boarded-up residence around 7 a.m. on Dec. 24.
A person was found inside the building on the first floor and removed by crews, who began performing CPR. At a press conference later in the morning, Deputy Chief Kathleen Mullen confirmed that person died from their injuries.
The injured firefighter fell through a hole that had burned into the floor, Mullen said. "We got very, very lucky the other firefighters were able to pull him out, but he has some significant burns, she said."
The firefighter is currently being treated at Hennepin County Medical Center for second and third-degree burns.
Mullen added that crews continue to battle the fire from the exterior of the building because it's not safe enough for firefighters to be inside. Once the fire is completely out, investigators will work to determine what caused the blaze.
Subzero temperatures Saturday morning made putting out the fire more complicated. "These temperatures have been just a nightmare for us," Mullen said. "When it's this far below zero, everything we've got is freezing up."
This is a developing story. KARE 11 will provide more details as new information becomes available.
