MINNEAPOLIS — The Nordstrom Rack located inside downtown Minneapolis' IDS Center is closing for good later this week.

A company spokesperson confirmed the closure to KARE 11 in a statement Tuesday, saying in part "we believe we’re best able to serve customers in the Minneapolis market by focusing on our nearby Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations, as well as online."

The store's final day of business will be Friday, Nov. 18.

"Decisions like this are never easy and we understand the impact they have on our team members. We’re committed to taking care of our employees as best we can, including finding them other roles within the company," the spokesperson added.

The Nordstrom Rack closure is the latest update to the changing landscape of Nicollet Mall and downtown Minneapolis.

A once bustling shopping hub, retail around Nicollet Mall has taken a hit over the years from a combination of factors. In 2017, the downtown Minneapolis Macy's store, housed in what was once a flagship Dayton's department store, closed for good.

Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and forced businesses to shut their doors and kept downtown workers at home. Two years later, the workforce has made a slight rebound, but many companies still offer remote options or hybrid schedules.

Minneapolis has also taken extra steps around safety on Nicollet Mall through Operation Endeavor, a new partnership between the city, police, and community leaders to address and prevent crime. The area has experienced issues relating to homeless and drug use, and some business owners have said they welcome the increased police presence along Nicollet Mall.

"There aren't as many disturbances up and down. Whether we're really solving problems is left to be said on statistics," said Ted Farrell, president of Haskell's Wine and Spirits. "It's good to see the police presence."

On the other hand, new life was recently breathed into the old Dayton's building, which reopened in 2021 as the rebranded Dayton's Project. The space now houses multiple offices and retail spaces, and this holiday season will host the Dayton's Project Winter Maker's Market.
