Minneapolis mayor posts support for Baltimore following bridge collapse

"Minneapolis stands with you," Frey posted on Tuesday morning.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is expressing his city's support for the people of Baltimore, following Tuesday morning's collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

"This morning Baltimore woke up to a bridge collapse, a tragedy we know all too well in Minneapolis," Frey posted on X. "As the city responds to this emergency, my thoughts are with the people of Baltimore. Minneapolis stands with you."

Thirteen people were killed and 145 more were injured on Aug. 1, 2007 when the I-35W bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River during the busy evening rush hour in Minneapolis. While the Baltimore collapse has been tied to a ship collision, the 35W collapse was blamed on a structural failure that prompted the review (and in several cases, replacement) of bridge spans across the state. A replacement bridge was constructed on an accelerated timeline, opening to the public in September 2008.

Frey was not yet living in Minneapolis at the time of the 35W bridge collapse, as he was a law student at Villanova University in 2007; he took office as mayor in 2018. Then-Minneapolis mayor R.T. Rybak and then-Gov. Tim Pawlenty led the city and state in mourning in the days, weeks and months following the 35W collapse in 2007, as well as leading relief efforts on behalf of victims and their families.
