MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police arrested a 17-year-old early Sunday morning near Hennepin Avenue and 9th Street after the teen allegedly pointed a 9mm handgun at police.
Police say the teen was wanted in connection with a robbery that happened earlier in the night where a cellphone was taken at gunpoint. The 17-year-old was located near the area of Hennepin Avenue and 9th Street in downtown Minneapolis and police say the teen ran when officers approached him.
Police say the teen was also with a 22-year-old who was taken into custody. A replica airsoft gun and suspected narcotics were also recovered during that arrest.
Police say officers chased the 17-year-old and they say during the chase he pointed a 9mm handgun in their direction.
While he was running police say the teen dropped the 9mm handgun. Officers also found an extended magazine separate from the gun. Police say the gun they retrieved had a live bullet jammed into the chamber. Police say the teen was eventually caught and arrested.
The incident was shared on the Minneapolis Police Department's Facebook page Sunday.
Chief Brian O'Hara says the officers showed 'great restraint.'
“The MPD is in mourning, but I couldn’t be more proud of all of our cops who continue to display exceptional courage and great restraint as they face armed criminals who threaten violence upon our community,” O’Hara said. “Last night’s incident is yet another example of the character and quality of the men and women of the MPD who continue to show up on behalf of our residents and protect with courage and serve with compassion.”
