The first mpox cases of the year have been reported in Minnesota. Here’s what to know

Officials anticipate a possible uptick in cases, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. In 2022, the state reported 234 cases.

MINNESOTA, USA — The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed 2023's first two cases of mpox during the week of June 9.

Both cases were adults in Hennepin County. In 2022, 234 people were reported to have mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, with the last case surfacing in November.

The virus typically spreads through extended skin-to-skin contact with someone who has the virus, usually through rashes, scabs or bodily fluids. MDH reports that two doses of the mpox vaccine significantly decrease the risk of infection or serious illness.

“The JYNNEOS vaccine is an important tool to prevent mpox infection, particularly after receiving two doses, as recommended,” Jayne Griffith, lead epidemiologist for surveillance at MDH, said in a press release. “Minnesota has an ample supply of the vaccine, and we encourage those at elevated risk to get both doses.”

MDH reported that health officials anticipate a possible increase in cases nationwide.

Mpox symptoms can include a rash, blisters, fever, chills and headaches. If you experience these symptoms, call your doctor to potentially prevent transmission.

Mpox symptoms tend to last about two to four weeks and usually get better without significant medical treatment. Patients can spread the virus from just before symptoms start until their rash is completely healed and the scabs have fallen off.

People at risk for severe illness should discuss infection with their healthcare provider, as more treatment may be beneficial, according to MDH's press release.
