Minnesota native eyes sailing spot for Paris Olympics

Lara Dallman-Weiss made her first Olympic debut in Toyko. Now, she's hungry for a chance to win a medal in Paris.

MINNEAPOLIS — Looking out the window right now, most Minnesotans might not be thinking about sailing on frozen lakes.

But not Lara Dallman-Weiss.

The Shoreview native is one win away from qualifying for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

"There is so much energy, and that's what I love about the Olympics. There is nothing like the Olympic spirit," Dallman-Weiss said.

Dallman-Weiss races on 470 dinghy boats. She dangles like a trapeze artist off the side of the two-person boat that has three sails. Her partner, Stuart McNay, won the eight-day Olympic Trial race on Jan. 13. They need to win the World Championship in Mallorca, Spain to compete in the Olympics. The championship event starts Feb. 24.

"Toyko was the first time that the U.S. was surpassed in medal count for sailing, so that is part of my drive," Dallman-Weiss said.

Watch Lara and other athletes compete in the Olympics on KARE 11, starting July 26.
