Minnesota ski resorts open for the season

It is never too early to hit the slopes! Check out these Minnesota resorts that are currently up and running for skiing and snowboarding.

HASTINGS, Minn. — Editor's note: This video aired on Nov. 24, 2023.

It's December, so you might be looking to hit the slopes! But if skiers or boarders take a peek out the window... it is still disappointingly brown and warm. That's where snowmaking comes in.

So which ski resorts and areas are open so far? We compiled a list of essential information for Minnesota skiers and snowboarders.

Afton Alps - Hastings

Located just 40 minutes outside of the Twin Cities, this ski resort is perfect for city-dwellers who are up for a quick day trip.

Hours listed on Afton's website are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. - 9 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. - 9 p.m., and Sunday 9:30 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Current ticket prices for adults range from $70-94. For more information, head to their site

Buck Hill - Burnsville

Another convenient Twin Cities area ski spot, Buck Hill offers an easy commute and low prices.

The resort opened up on Dec. 3, and the Buck Hill Facebook page has updates on what days the slopes will be open. Tickets are listed as $39 for adults.

Giants Ridge - Biwabik

Skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes at Giants Ridge on Dec. 2, kicking off the season, according to the resort's Facebook

The Ridge is open from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., according to a Facebook post on Dec. 26. Check the Giants Ridge Facebook ahead of time as it may close depending on weather.

Check the website for hours as they vary throughout the holiday and regular season schedules. Adult tickets range from $25-58, with children ages 6 or younger getting in free.

Lutsen Mountains - Lutsen

If one day on the slopes can't fulfill your needs, head to Lutsen Mountains for an overnight adventure. Runs opened on Dec. 1, though check online as not every weekday is open.

One-day tickets are around $77 in December and $98 in the months following. Click here for more specific information.

Wild Mountain - Taylors Falls

Whether you like to ski or snow tube, Wild Mountain has what you're looking for. Located an hour from Minneapolis, the resort is a doable day trip for city residents.

The resort announced on Facebook Dec. 1 that 10 trails, three chairs and two rope runs are open daily from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Tickets are $60 for adults and $48 for children ages 6-12.

Know before you go

Check resort websites or social media pages, as they often post which runs and facilities will be open ahead of time.

If you plan on renting equipment, know that it will cost an extra $30-50.

Cheaper half-day or night lift passes are frequently offered as an alternative to a whole-day pass.
