MINNEAPOLIS — The Twins winning streak came to an end Sunday, but local sports fans are still buzzing about the recent trends for most of the local professional sports franchises.
The good news seems to be pouring in from many venues, including Target Field, the Target Center, Allianz Stadium, and U.S. Bank Stadium.
The Timberwolves swept the Suns in the first round of the NBA playoffs and already took the first game against the Nuggets in the second round. As Twins fans headed into Target Field Sunday afternoon, the team was riding a double-digit winning streak, reminiscent of the streak that propelled them to a World Series victory in 1991.
"This is wonderful! It's a long time coming," Patty Stanek told KARE as she headed into the Twins game with the Red Sox Sunday.
"With them now and the Timberwolves, and the excitement with the Vikings new quarterback! Come on! Our city! Everyone is buzzing."
Chris Simpson was also delighted with the direction of local teams, in a market where there's often not enough good news to go around.
"It's exciting! It's really exciting to see it here. We've lived up here 12 years and this is the first time you feel the energy! The Vikings just had a great draft, there’s a lot of good things going on in sports."
His son, Caeden, was reveling in the positive vibes, especially for a basketball team that has been on the ropes in recent memory.
"I'm just really happy with how our sports teams are going, man! The Wolves beat Denver in game one, and that just gives us a bigger hope we can make the finals."
Minnesota sports fans know the drill all too well; the years that begin with high hopes and fade or fall apart at the last minute. In fact, some would even suggest just getting excited about winning streaks is enough to tempt the sports gods to jinx the home team.
But others aren't sweating it. They say they'll be fine either way.
"If there's a letdown it doesn't bother me," Twins fan Jean Haworth told KARE. "Nope. I just hope for the best and cheer like crazy. It's fun."
Her friend Barb Salomon added, "It's about the fun as much as it is about the winning."
