MINNETONKA, Minn. — Minnetonka Police are investigating a "possible hate crime" after school officials say an "act of violence" occurred last week against a Hopkins High School student who identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community.

The Minnetonka Police Department confirmed the investigation and shared a "call for service" log from the report they received on May 30. The record is redacted and provides little detail about the incident.

When asked about the alleged attack, a spokesperson for the city of Minnetonka provided a statement to KARE 11.

"Minnetonka police are investigating an alleged assault at Hopkins High School as a possible hate crime. The assault is reported to have injured a student at the school last Thursday, May 30. Details remain limited as the case was reported to police hours after the assault is said to have taken place. The case remains active and there is no other information available at this time."

In a letter sent to Hopkins High School families, Principal Crystal Ballard said the student was "physically injured" and that school officials are working with district leaders and the police in gathering information.

"Hopkins Public Schools works very intentionally to create safe places for LGBTQ+ families, staff and scholars," Ballard wrote. "Please do not hesitate to reach out to our LGBTQ+ Liaison Laura Jensen if your scholar needs support. The Trevor Project is a resource that you can use as we transition into the summer months."

A rally is being held Wednesday morning at Hopkins High School to support the injured student.
