Police: Gunman dead, 2 Hennepin County deputies injured in exchange of gunfire in Minnetonka

The deputies, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, were serving a warrant at a home in the 13000 block of East Crestwood Drive in Minnetonka.

MINNETONKA, Minn. — A Hennepin County deputy was shot and another deputy was hurt "as a result of the gunfire" while serving a warrant in Minnetonka on Wednesday, according to authorities. Law enforcement also announced the gunman died at the scene.

The deputies, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, were serving the warrant at a home in the 13000 block of East Crestwood Drive in Minnetonka. In a press conference Wednesday evening, Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt said the injuries of the deputy shot were non-life-threatening but "very serious."

Minnetonka Police Chief Scott Boerboom spoke from a news conference earlier Wednesday, saying Minnetonka officers were dispatched to help the deputies who had been serving a warrant when shots were fired.

At least one deputy had been struck, according to Chief Boerboom.

Officers responded and rendered aid.

Police and law enforcement agencies from across the metro responded to the incident in the Glen Lake neighborhood, which is near Interstate 494 and Excelsior Boulevard.

Chris Hrapsky described that he had never seen so many armored police vehicles swarm a neighborhood. A throng of law enforcement officers cordoned off several blocks around the area.

"We rely on mutual aid. Not any of our cities could handle an incident like this alone, so when there’s a call for help we often get more than we need," Chief Boerboom said in the news conference. "We train together, and I think it’s a testament to our cooperation between agencies… making sure everybody’s safe, that’s the goal."

The huge police response brought back painful memories of the Burnsville deadly first responders' shooting in February.

“It’s difficult, but police officers… in the moment they respond, because they know they have a job to do. But we’ll go back, that’s when we start to think about what just happened. And it’s hard. Ask our officers, it’s very difficult, You’ve seen what’s happened in the past few weeks," Chief Boerboom said in the news conference. "It’s difficult, but we also know we have a job to do, and when we take care of this scene here, we’ll go back and we will have those conversations with our officers and make sure they’re in a good place.”

The shelter-in-place order was  lifted just after 6:30 p.m. Earlier, Minnetonka Schools told KARE 11 that their schools were not locked down but Chris Hrapsky confirmed that nearby Notre Dame Academy, which is two blocks away, had temporarily been put on "soft lockdown."

Minnetonka police posted on X of "an incident at the intersection of East Crestwood Drive and Mayview Terrace" and advised people to avoid the area.

Earlier, residents in the area received a mobile phone alert and were told to shelter in place, noting "shooting is contained to house" in the area of East Crestwood Drive.

KARE 11 reporter Chris Hrapsky shared video of armored vehicles on Highway 169 heading toward the scene.

Minnetonka police will soon be having a news conference on the shooting, which KARE 11 will be livestreaming.
