ST PAUL, Minn. — A commission tasked with choosing Minnesota's new official emblems is set to narrow the field next week.
The State Emblems Redesign Commission (SERC) will meet Tuesday to choose five finalists for Minnesota's official state seal, and five finalists for Minnesota's state flag.
Under a law passed in the last legislative session earlier this year, the commission must decide on a new official state seal and state flag design by Jan. 1, 2024.
The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) said more than 2,600 designs were submitted by the public for consideration during an open submission period in October. The majority of the submissions (85%) were flag designs.
The commission is now encouraging the public to voice their opinion on the designs, because public comment is a mandatory part of the statute.
Unless the legislature intervenes, the new flag should fly for the first time on Statehood Day on May 11, 2024.
