9 wounded by hail of gunfire in south Minneapolis

Police Chief Brian O'Hara said 41 shell casings of three different calibers of rounds were recovered from the scene.

MINNEAPOLIS — Nine people are recovering after being caught in a hail of gunfire near East Franklin and Chicago Avenues in south Minneapolis Sunday.

According to MPD, officers from the Metro Transit Police Department heard gunshots in the area just before 6 p.m., including the sound of automatic gunfire, and responded to the scene along with squads from MPD.

Responding officers found three victims suffering from gunshot wounds on the ground in front of the Minneapolis Market, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara.

While the officers were responding to help those three, another person who had been shot approached police and multiple other victims arrived at a local hospital to be treated.

In total police say nine people were shot. All those struck are expected to survive, police say.

O'Hara said 41 shell casings of three different calibers of rounds were recovered from the scene. A nearby home was also hit by a bullet, although no one inside the structure was injured.

According to preliminary information from the chief, two suspected gunmen wearing hoodies were seen fleeing from the area heading northbound on Elliot Avenue. At this point, no arrests have been reported.
