MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Police Department is investigating a shooting that left a mother and her child wounded Sunday night.
MPD officers responded to the 2900 block of Cedar Avenue South where they found evidence of gunfire in the alley shortly after 9 p.m., said MPD Chief Brian O'Hara in a late press conference.
A preliminary investigation suggests that a man dressed in dark clothing walked up to a vehicle in the alley that the mother and her two-year-old toddler were sitting in and opened fire.
The mother drove herself and the child to a local hospital. Police say she has since been transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center. O'Hara told reporters both were in stable condition and expected to survive. The chief added that the shooting appeared to be targeted, but also could have been a case of mistaken identity.
“The shooting of a child is absolutely horrific,” said Chief O’Hara. “It is outrageous. I am most thankful that it appears this child will survive.”
MPD is also investigating a separate shooting that occurred about 20 minutes later on the 2800 block of 16th Avenue South.
Officers responding to reports of gunfire found a 30-year-old man had been shot inside his home and was suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was taken to HCMC. The chief said the shooter is known to the victim, adding that the second shooting was unrelated to the first.
At this point, there have been no arrests in either incident.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
