Mpls. police warn of phone scams

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minneapolis Police Department is warning people of a phone scam that seems to be happening in the metro area.

Several residents have reported that they have received calls from both male and female callers identifying themselves as being with the Internal Revenue Service. When the number comes up on Caller ID it shows the Minneapolis Police Department's Fifth Precinct's number (612-673-5705),

The callers are telling residents that they Minneapolis Police Department is going to "put them behind bars." Some of the calls seek personal information and some are "threatening in nature," according the MPD.

The MPD reminds people to never provide personal information over the phone and that the MPD would "never engage in calls of the nature.

If Minneapolis residents do receive calls of this nature they should call their local precinct at one of the following numbers:

2nd Precinct: 612-673-5702

3rd Precinct: 612-673-5703

4th Precinct: 612-673-5704

5th Precinct: 612-673-5705
