GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn--Now that summer has turned to fall, there are still some great ways to enjoy the beauty of your yard. Heidi Heiland Master Gardener from Heidi’s Lifestyle Gardens and their new GrowHaus shares the best container plants to install for a sustainable and festive fall.

Mums, Grasses, Peppers, Petunias, Chard

Kale – edible or not

Perennial – Grasses, Heuchera, Lysimachia

All of these fall plants are low maintenance, no deadheading or pinching is needed. In the cool season, not much water is required, either. As always, though, we suggest deep watering less frequently i.e. really soak the container once a week then let it dry out a bit is better than watering daily or every few days.

After your fall containers have bloomed out and it is time for spruce tips (around Nov 1), you can install any of the perennials in your garden and don’t forget to water them in. Then, around Dec 1, once the ground has frozen, simply mulch those new installs with soil, leaves or straw and they should winter over nicely.
